Today I write while enjoying my dinner of baked tilapia, steamed broccoli & cauliflower and cooked quinoa. Healthfood for sure, but delicious nonetheless. I've been trying to eat healthier lately since I saw a statistic reported regarding overweight parents (yeah, I'm overweight) and their unhealthy eating habits passing down their unhealthy eating habits and thus, their health problems due to being overweight. I had considered myself a relatively healthy eater, but in hindsight of just two weeks, I can see that just wasn't true. A point also brought up by the report - parents who minimalize their obesity, also minimalize the importance of a healthy diet.
Oh, I'll admit, it aint easy! Those damned cakes, cookies, ice creams (I binged and had 2 nutty chocolate cones the other day in a 20 minute break), chips, fries and fried foods are calling my name, but But BUT: everyday is getting easier. For instance, dinner last night with Brendan could have been a way easy way to cheat myself out of a healthy meal. I had planned to get something fried or really fatty the whole day. But when I got there and I looked at the menu, my normal order of Fried fish n chips just didn't seem as appealing as the baked salmon with rice and steamed veggies (yeah, I'm having something similar tonight, I know). Why? I have NO idea except that I've been eating mostly baked, steamed or boiled food for the last two weeks & all I saw in my mind when I read Fish n Chips on the menu was the big vat of grease they use to fry it in. Not too appealing.
Don't get me wrong, my baked, steamed and boiled dishes are anything but bland - I use fresh hot peppers, onion, garlic, bells, you name it for spices, lemon and I can't even think of what else all over them. I cannot stand bland, boring food - so if you're like me and you need exciting flavors and food - DON'T BE DISCOURAGED, YOU CAN EAT HEALTHY TOO! Once you start, you'll be glad you did AND, you will find it gets easier with each passing day.
Oh, and don't get me wrong, I still plan to have some of the unhealthy stuff. I just plan to make them far and few between. Maybe once or twice a week. It's a fair compromise.
Happy Cooking!
